PCCN Certification Introduction

The PCCN Certification is a credential that is granted by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).   This designation is primarily for those nurses working in a Progressive Care area such as intermediate care units, direct observation units, step-down units, telemetry units, transitional care units and emergency departments.   AACN recognizes progressive care as part of the continuum of critical care.

PCCN Exam Eligibility Requirements

  • Current unencumbered licensure as an RN or APRN in the U.S.
  • Meet one of the following clinical practice requirement options
    • Option 1:  Practice as an RN or APRN for 1750 hours in direct bedside care of acutely ill adult patients during the previous two years, with 875 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application.
    • Option 2:  Practice as an RN or APRN for at least 5 years with a minimum of 2000 hours in direct bedside care of acutely ill adult patients, with 144 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application.

PCCN Exam Questions

  • The PCCN Exam is a 2.5 hour exam
  • The exam contains 125 items; 100 items are scored and 25 are used to gather data for future exams
  • 80% focuses on Clinical Judgement
  • 20% focuses on Professional Caring

Passing Results For PCCN Exam

  • If you complete the exam via computer based testing, your results will be available upon completion of the exam.
  • If you complete the exam via paper and pencil testing, your results will be available by mail in 3 to 4 weeks.
