CCRN Certification Introduction
The CCRN specialty certification was introduced in 1976 by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN.org). This designation is primarily for those nurses working in acutely/critically ill adult, pediatric or neonatal patients. Nurses seeking the CCRN Certification usually work in the following areas; ICU, CCU, combined ICU/CCU areas, medical surgical ICU’s trauma units or critical care transport/flight.

CCRN Exam Eligibility Requirements
- Current unencumbered licensure as an RN or APRN in the U.S.
- Meet one of the following clinical practice requirement options
- Option 1: Practice as an RN or APRN for 1750 hours; in direct bedside care of acutely/critical ill adult patients during the previous two years. 875 of your clinical hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application.
- Option 2: Practice as an RN or APRN for at least 5 years with a minimum of 2000 hours; in direct bedside care of acutely/critically ill adult patients. 144 of your clinical hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application.
CCRN Exam Questions
- The CCRN Exam is a 3.0 hour exam
- The exam contains 150 items; 125 items are scored and 25 are used to gather data for future exams
- 80% focuses on Clinical Judgement
- 20% focuses on Professional Caring
Passing Results For CCRN Exam
- If you complete the exam via computer based testing, your results will be available upon completion of the exam.
- If you complete the exam via paper and pencil testing; your results will be available by mail in 3 to 4 weeks.
